Dear Nevada County,
In the event of natural disaster, systemic economic failure, or food/fuel-supply interruption, local markets have, on average, only 3 days of inventory on hand. Neighborhood Readiness Project is an on-going community campaign encouraging bulk-foods storage at home.
Though we are no longer facilitating orders through this website, local residents are welcome to continue to order from a full complement of discounted bulk items from the UNFI catalogue at the following markets: Briar Patch Cooperative Market, Mother Truckers Market, Natural Selection Food & Wine Warehouse and Natural Valley Health Foods. (Or from any websites listed on our "links" page.) NRP will re-launch advertising for this program every third year to facilitate foodstuffs rotation.
Purchasers obtaining staple foods outside of the program will still be very welcome to participate in any educational or foods-storage-assistance events generated by the project. Though long-term storage is encouraged, participants will own and use their purchased foodstuffs as they see fit. The idea is to de-centralize.. for many to hold a part. NRP is not motivated by any political or religious perspective other than the idea of neighbor helping neighbor.
Neighborhood Readiness Project offers (by appointment) on-going hands-on food storage assistance and shared resources for residents who have purchased staple goods for long-term storage, ie: oxygen-replacing nitrogen tanks and sealing protocols and equipment. Peak Moment TV's how-to video of our bagging process, "How to Package Bulk Foods for Long-Term Storage" DVD is available for ciewing from Nevada City's Apple Center lending-library, or on-line at www.peakmoment.tv with Flash Player after May, 2010.. And currently, if you use Media Player, it can be found on NCTV at the following link: http://nevco.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=5&clip_id=1681
Additionally, the Cultural Director of the Tsi-Akim Maidu Tribe will offer instruction in the storing and preparation of regional and traditional foods (See "Storage Assistance" for March 27, 2010 event). Sierra Seeds Co-op will offer seed-bank seminars. Most hands-on workshops will take place at the APPLE Center in Nevada City (Apple-NC.org) or the Tsi-Akim Maidu Cultural Center (Pata Panaka Village).

In future, if the supply trucks aren't rolling, we'll be able to take care of our neighbors for a few transitional months. Nevada County will stand as a model for stored-food wealth, preparedness and generosity-of-spirit.
